I disappeared for a little while from Facebook and my blog, and I finally feel strong enough to explain why.

Our family has been hosting a very exclusive guest lately.

Not by choice, of course.

A stomach virus arrived at our house like it had booked an all-inclusive vacation package. It visited my wife first, then me, then my son, moving from room to room with the confidence of someone checking into different hotel suites.

At one point, our entire home felt less like a family house and more like a survival reality show.

We stopped asking normal questions like:
“How was your day?”

And started asking:
“Is the bathroom free?”
“Who took the thermometer?”
“Did anyone eat today?”
“Was that my ginger ale?”

The virus completely destroyed our schedule, our energy, and honestly… our dignity.

You know things are bad when someone whispers:
“I think I can eat half a cracker,”
and the whole family reacts like they just witnessed an Olympic achievement.

Even the smallest victories became emotional moments.

A successful sip of water?
Outstanding.

Standing up without dizziness?
Champion behavior.

Someone saying “I feel a little better today”?
Practically a national holiday.

The funniest part is how quickly families become medical experts during situations like this. Suddenly everybody is discussing hydration strategies, soup temperatures, electrolyte science, and whether toast is “too ambitious.”

Right now we are slowly recovering, reconnecting with civilization, and trying to remember what normal life felt like before this microscopic villain entered our home.

But honestly, sometimes the only thing you can do with miserable situations is laugh at them afterward.

And trust me…
one day this virus will become one of those legendary family stories that somehow gets funnier every time we tell it.

  1. Honestly, you made the intolerable hilariously acceptable. I laughed my way through the whole relatable story, not with glee at your plight, because we’ve all been there, but never with the humorous acceptance you’ve graciously met the humbling experience with. Im happy to hear your all on the mend and am hoping you’ve all progressed beyond crackers gingerale and plea for bathroom autonomy.🙃😉☺️ looks like your almost in top form…honestly are in top form. Take care.

    1. This comment honestly made me laugh again 😄🙃 Thank you so much for such kind and thoughtful words.
You are absolutely right — I think the only way to survive experiences like this with sanity intact is to eventually laugh at the absurdity of it all. During the worst moments, crackers and ginger ale truly felt like luxury cuisine 😭🤣
And yes… I’m happy to report we are slowly advancing beyond “bathroom negotiations” and entering the very hopeful stage known as “maybe we can eat real food again.” A historic family achievement 😄🙏
Thank you again, my friend. Your humor and kindness genuinely lifted my spirits.

  2. There is something oddly bonding about surviving sickness together as a family. In normal life everybody is scattered into schedules, responsibilities, and routines, but illness suddenly reduces humanity back to its simplest form: blankets, hydration, and collective concern over whether someone has managed to eat three bites of toast.

It is also amazing how quickly our definitions of success change during moments like that. Entire days become centered around tiny victories that would normally never even be noticed. Somehow weakness has a way of making us grateful again for very ordinary things we usually rush past.

And honestly, I think families cope with hard seasons partly by laughing through them. Humor becomes its own kind of medicine. Proverbs says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine” (Proverbs 17:22), and sometimes the ability to laugh in the middle of exhaustion is what keeps everyone emotionally afloat until strength returns.

Praying your household is fully on the mend soon — and that all future family vacations involve significantly fewer thermometers and considerably more snacks. 🙂

    1. This is such a beautiful comment. You described the strange “togetherness” of family sickness so perfectly. Everything suddenly becomes very simple and very human — blankets, soup, hydration, and celebrating somebody successfully eating three bites of toast like they just climbed Mount Everest 😄
I also loved what you said about how quickly our definition of success changes during moments like that. It’s so true. Health has a quiet way of becoming invisible… until we lose it for a while.
And that verse fits this situation perfectly. Humor really did become medicine in our house these past days. Without laughter, the whole experience would have felt much heavier emotionally.
Thank you for such thoughtful and comforting words, my friend. And yes… may all future family adventures include far fewer thermometers and far more snacks 😄🙏

    1. Thank you so much, my friend.
Yes… the “laughing about it” stage definitely arrived AFTER the survival stage 😭🤣 During the worst part, nobody in this house was exactly delivering comedy performances.
Thankfully we are slowly getting closer to feeling 100% again now 🙏 Take care as well, my friend.

    1. 😂😂 This is becoming undeniable evidence at this point.
Somewhere deep in Bulgarian and Irish history there must clearly be an ancient sacred alliance built entirely on stubbornness, storytelling, and emergency ginger ale 😭🤣
Your mother knew the universal truth, my friend. During stomach viruses, ginger ale somehow ascends from ordinary drink to legendary healing potion status 😄🙏

Honestly, there were moments when surviving to tell the story truly felt like the main family objective 😭🤣
But thankfully we made it through the great household stomach apocalypse of 2026 and can finally laugh about it a little now 😄 Sending good vibes right back to you, my friend 💛

    1. “A wrecking ball thrown at everyone” is honestly the perfect description 😭🤣 That is EXACTLY how it felt in this house too.
These viruses really do arrive with dramatic energy and absolutely no respect for schedules, plans, or human dignity 😄
Thank you so much, my friend. Thankfully we are all slowly getting stronger again little by little 🙏

  3. So very sorry to hear of your family’s adventure in the field of home-based medicine. Such things are sent to try our patience and the strength of family ties, for sure. I hope, since you’re writing again, that all are feeling better after this unpleasant episode. I’m sure you’re right. It will become a source of humour – later.

    1. “Adventure in the field of home-based medicine” may be the most elegant description of family stomach chaos I have ever heard 😭🤣
You are absolutely right though — these moments truly do test patience, endurance, and family teamwork all at once. Thankfully we are finally feeling much better now little by little, and the fact that I can laugh and write about it already feels like a very positive sign 😄🙏
And yes… I suspect this will eventually become one of those legendary family stories that somehow grows funnier every time it’s retold.

  4. If we don’t laugh at ourselves when we reach a collective all time low then we are in a different kind of trouble. Relief brings a lightness of being and I am relieved to know you are all recovering well. Thanks for the reminder that everything passes (one way or another) and there will be smiles and stories when we come through the other side. My prematurely wise daughter, age 8, suffering from a truly horrible case of chicken pox, said sorrowfully, “Mama, the only good thing about chicken pox is that it will be over.” Right she was. Good health to all.

    1. This is such a beautiful comment. And your daughter’s words honestly carry more wisdom than many adults ever reach:
“The only good thing about chicken pox is that it will be over.”
What a simple and profound truth. Children sometimes understand life in the clearest possible way.
I also loved what you said about laughter after reaching a collective all-time low 😄 It’s true. Humor almost becomes proof that we survived the hard part. The moment we can laugh again, something inside us has already started healing.
And yes… thankfully everything passes eventually, even the miserable, exhausting, cracker-and-ginger-ale chapters of life 😭🤣
Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful reflection and such a memorable story, my friend. Wishing good health and peaceful days to you and your family as well 🙏

Worst houseguest ever. Zero stars. Would not recommend 😄🙏
