Life is a lot like a box of chocolates.

Yes, I know. Someone already said that.

But I think he left out an important detail.

Nobody warns you about the chocolates filled with some strange toothpaste-flavored mystery cream.

You know the ones. They look beautiful. Perfect shape. Shiny chocolate coating. You pick one with confidence, take a big bite and immediately realize that life has betrayed you.

Welcome to adulthood.

I think most of us are trying to live on what I call the chocolate side of life.

It is that sweet place where everything feels right. The family is happy. The bills are paid. The house is clean. Nobody needs anything from us. Our plans work. Our dreams are moving forward. And, perhaps most unbelievable of all, we make a cup of coffee and actually drink it while it is still hot.

Beautiful.

Unfortunately, we cannot live there permanently.

Because life does not give us a box filled only with our favorites.

Life gives us the assorted box.

And apparently, there are no labels.

Childhood Was Milk Chocolate

If life were chocolate, childhood would probably be milk chocolate.

Sweet. Simple. Easy to love.

Our biggest problems were things like being told we couldn’t have another piece before dinner.

We didn’t worry about electricity bills, insurance, taxes, deadlines, grocery prices, passwords, cholesterol, or why the washing machine suddenly started making a noise that sounds like a helicopter preparing for takeoff.

Then adulthood arrives.

And somebody replaces your milk chocolate with a bar of 99% dark chocolate.

It still looks like chocolate.

It still smells like chocolate.

But you take one bite and suddenly your mouth feels like the Sahara Desert.

That is adulthood.

Paying taxes is dark chocolate.

Laundry is dark chocolate.

Calling customer service and hearing, “Your call is very important to us” for 47 minutes is extremely dark chocolate.

And somewhere along the way, we also discover that vegetables are not simply colorful decorations placed beside the real food.

Apparently, we are supposed to eat them.

Every day.

Nobody mentioned this when we were eight.

The Assorted Box of People

Then there are the people we meet.

People are definitely an assorted box.

Some are like chocolate-covered Rice Krispies. Light, crunchy, cheerful, and somehow able to make almost any situation more fun.

Some are like caramel. Warm, familiar, comforting. You know exactly what you are getting, and you are always happy when they are around.

Some are like hazelnut chocolate. A little nutty, but in the best possible way.

And then there are the chili chocolates.

They look innocent.

They seem sweet.

Everything is going beautifully.

Then five minutes later, you are sweating, confused, and wondering why you ever opened the box.

The older I get, the more I understand that not every chocolate is meant to become my favorite.

And not every person has to stay in my box.

That sounded slightly more threatening than I intended.

Let’s move on.

The Nutty Days

Of course, life also gives us those days when absolutely nothing works.

The alarm doesn’t go off.

You spill coffee on your shirt.

You cannot find your keys.

You walk into a room and completely forget why you are there.

Then your computer announces:

UPDATE REQUIRED.

Not tomorrow.

Not tonight.

Right now.

Preferably three minutes before your deadline.

These are the nutty days.

Crunchy. Messy. Unpredictable.

The kind of days that get stuck between the teeth of your patience.

And when several small things go wrong at once, we have a strange habit of deciding that the entire day is ruined.

Sometimes even the entire week.

But would you throw away a whole box of chocolates because you didn’t like one piece?

Well…

Maybe, if it was the toothpaste one.

But normally, no.

You put it aside and try another.

Perhaps we could do the same with our days.

The Correct Temperature for Life

Chocolate also teaches us something else.

Temperature matters.

Leave chocolate somewhere too cold and it becomes hard. Try to bite it and you may need a dentist afterward.

Leave it somewhere too hot and it becomes a sticky, unrecognizable puddle at the bottom of your bag.

Life can do the same to us.

When we become too rigid, we snap.

When everything becomes too stressful, we melt.

Maybe the chocolate side of life exists somewhere in between.

Soft enough to bend.

Strong enough to keep our shape.

And willing to accept a little mess.

Because life is messy.

Plans melt.

People surprise us.

Dreams change shape.

Sometimes we reach for caramel and get coconut.

Sometimes we carefully unwrap something that looks wonderful and discover that we don’t like it at all.

And sometimes the piece we almost didn’t choose becomes our favorite.

That is the beauty of the assorted box.

We don’t know everything that is coming.

Don’t Throw Away the Box

For me, living on the chocolate side of life doesn’t mean pretending everything is sweet.

That would be easy to write, but impossible to live.

There will be bitter pieces.

There will be nutty days.

There will be melted plans, broken expectations, and a few people who turn out to contain unexpected chili peppers.

The chocolate side of life is something different.

It is remembering that one bitter piece does not define the whole box.

One difficult morning does not define the whole day.

One disappointing chapter does not define your whole story.

You taste it.

You make the appropriate face.

You wonder who on Earth decided that flavor belonged inside chocolate.

And then you reach into the box again.

Because there may still be caramel waiting.

There may still be something crunchy.

There may still be something wonderful that you have never tasted before.

Life is too short to expect every piece to be perfect.

So enjoy the sweet ones slowly.

Survive the bitter ones.

Laugh at the nutty ones.

Be careful with the chili ones.

And when life gets too hot and you find yourself melting into an unrecognizable puddle…

find somewhere cool, pull yourself together, and continue.

The box isn’t empty yet.

And that, perhaps, is the real chocolate side of life.

Not a life where everything is sweet.

A life where we keep reaching for the next piece.

Preferably with coffee nearby. 🍫☕
